The Commitment of God

Romans 8:38-39 say “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” But what does this mean? Does this mean that we are always connected with God?
What happens when we don’t feel God’s connection, His presence? What happens when we feel alone and out in the cold? Is God still there? And if so, why can’t we feel Him?
There are times in everyone’s lives when these questions arise. Over and over again we are told that God is with us at all times but moments in life (some longer than others) we just don’t know if that is true.
I have a few friends that seem to be going through this very thing right now. They are wondering if God has left them, if He even cares. And I am reminded of Marta, my wife. One thing that I have learned through marriage is that love is not a feeling, love is a commitment. I know that even when Marta and I have a disagreement, that we still love each other, even if our actions or words sometimes don’t show it. We are connected by this commitment of love.
And each of us are connected by a commitment of love to God as well, and God is connected by this commitment too. So, even though we might not see eye-to-eye with God sometimes. Or we are angry with Him. Or we wonder why He would allow something to happen, we are still connected by this deeper commitment. This love that is more than just surface level, but it is in the core of our being.
So know this, even though it may feel that God isn’t there, He is. And He is committed to you and wants to know you are committed to Him as well. Each day I choose to put Marta first. I choose to lose my own selfish desires for Marta’s desires. And God does this with us as well. To the extent that He sent His son to die for us. Are you choosing God daily? Are you committed to Him or are you just at surface-level with your love? Because God definitely wants to go deeper.
